A Boston man is being held without bail after prosecutors say he gunned down a 31-year-old man and also shot the victim’s brother during a summer barbecue.

Julian Troche, 24, stood behind a door inside Dorchester District Court, out of sight as a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf. Prosecutors say Troche shot and killed Andrew Flonory, 31, and wounded his brother, Dwayne Flonory, just after 11 p.m. on the night of June 18.

A semi-literate Bay State bank robber — dubbed the “Spelling Bee Bandit” because his hold-up notes misspell the word “robbery” — is wanted in a handful of recent Greater Boston heists, and authorities are now offering up to $1,000 for tips leading to his capture.

The FBI says the robber’s M.O. is the same in four robberies so far. He enters the bank wearing a baseball cap, puts on a pair of sunglasses, scrawls the word “Robery” on the back of a withdrawal slip, slides it to a teller and makes off with the haul.

Dorchester argument turns deadly as one fatally shot, authorities say

A heated argument between two men inside a Dorchester home yesterday afternoon led to a deadly shooting, police officials said last night as investigators questioned the suspected gunman and detectives combed the scene for evidence.

Police Commissioner William B. Evans said officers responding to a report of shots fired on West Cottage Street about 4:20 p.m. found a man in his late 20s or early 30s suffering from apparent gunshot wounds inside the front doorway of a home.

A 27-year-old Vermont man accused of viciously kicking a puppy to death during a heated argument with his girlfriend is facing an animal cruelty charge, state police said.

Jonathan Blake of Grafton, Vt.,was burying the 16-week-old black Labrador mix Shadow when troopers arrived at his Eastman Road home about 6 a.m. Wednesday, police say.

In the latest case of a faked hate crime, a 20-year-old man has admitted he made it up when he told Malden cops he was harassed by two men proclaiming it’s “Trump country now.”

The man, whose name police have not released, had filed a complaint saying when he got off an MBTA bus near Broadway Square in Malden at 10 p.m. Tuesday, at least two white men approached him.

Massachusetts man surrenders after armed standoff

NORTON, Mass. — A Massachusetts man who barricaded himself inside his home and fired several shots at police outside has surrendered.

No one was hurt in the standoff in Norton that started at about 9:30 p.m. Thursday and lasted until about 12:15 a.m. Friday.

Police say the standoff started as an argument between a man and a woman in the home. The woman and a young child escaped the home unharmed.

Norton police say the man at one point told officers he had 500 rounds of ammunition.

Man pleads not guilty to sexually assaulting girl, 5

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A Massachusetts man has been charged with sexually assaulting a 5-year-old girl five years ago.

The Berkshire Eagle reports (http://bit.ly/2goQyaQ ) 32-year-old Stephen Hyland recently pleaded not guilty in Berkshire Superior Court to charges that include rape of a child with force.

Authorities say Hyland assaulted the child in the summer of 2011 when the two were walking near a reservoir in the town of Otis. They say the girl told a family member in August.


Boston man denies murder charge in fatal shooting

BOSTON — A Boston man has pleaded not guilty to murder and other charges in a summer shooting that killed a man in the same neighborhood where his sister was slain six years ago.

Twenty-four-year-old Julian Troche was ordered held without bail Thursday in the June shooting that killed 31-year-old Andrew Flonory and injured his brother, Dwayne.

Prosecutors allege Troche opened fire on the brothers as they were headed to a house party in Mattapan.

DA: 3 girls, 15, charged with hate crime in train assault

BOSTON — Authorities in Massachusetts say three 15-year-old girls are facing hate crime charges after they allegedly assaulted a woman who they thought was an immigrant on a commuter train this month.

Suffolk County prosecutors say the Boston teens were all charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and a civil rights violation causing injury. They have been arraigned and released to their parents.

An overseas hoax caller was behind a threat that briefly forced the evacuation of a Boston University library and the closure of nearby roads this morning, authorities said.

The caller claimed to have barricaded himself in a fourth-floor room at the Mugar Memorial Library with guns and a booby-trapped door, spurring local and state police to swarm the area, according to police.

MBTA proposes daily Gillette train service under pilot program

The MBTA wants to run daily commuter trains from Boston to Gillette Stadium under an approximately year-long pilot program, according to a proposal state transportation officials plan to pitch to local leaders in the coming weeks.

The pilot program, which an MBTA spokesman said wouldn’t start until at least the fall of 2018, would revive a version of a controversial plan the state pushed in the waning months of former Gov. Deval Patrick’s second term, only to be sidelined amid intense local opposition.

Springfield police investigate fatal shooting

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Springfield police are investigating the city's 11th homicide of the year.

Police on Friday identified the man shot in the city Wednesday night as 38-year-old Eric Caudle.

Officers responding to the city' automated gunfire detection system found Caudle at about 8:45 p.m. Wednesday in the city's Six Corners neighborhood suffering from a gunshot wound. Police and then emergency medical technicians provided CPR at the scene. The victim was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead just after 10 p.m.
